Part 140: The Epic of Gilgaluf - Chapter 13
Okay, World 3 tablet collection. The Epic of Gilgaluf - Chapter 13
...after wrecking Mel real quick.
Lenna can't actually do this. Neither can Mel.
Vs. Melusine. Got a pretty good weapon for her, too. At least for a Blue Mage like me... (That said, when I confirmed that she was vulnerable to Fire my response was predictable.)
: Huh. Got that fake sword Gilgamesh tried to use on us. Punch time!
: Why didn't this idiot invest in clothes? People wear them for a reason.
: I command the lightning AND the cold!
: Whatever. Burn, bitch.
: Nooooo, my one weakness!
: Not a very big secret, really. I mean, you use everything BUT fire, so...

I think this summarizes Exdeath pretty well:
: Voidvoidvoidvoid...
This section is basically a massive collect-a-thon, so I head off to Bal's basement.
Vs. Odin. After the first couple tries I realize I'm not strong enough to take him in a straight fight, so (after briefly considering waiting for Flare) I look up how to cheese him. I'm not very good at considering status attacks for bosses, am I? Probably because I'm used to them being immune to everything. (I really feel like how you find Odin in 6 is a reference to this strategy...)
: This thing tingles!
: Lessee, take the spell, channel it through my sword, swing it, and... Instant statue!

I might actually use this guy this time. The proper, non-Lamp-abusing way, even.
I have two reasons to be here, both of them involving Stingrays (which are ridiculously high-level, but quite easy if you realize that you can Blind them and they only use physical attacks. Level 3 Flare helps cut through their absurd HP in timely fashion, incidentally).
Reason number 1: Mighty Guard, which is (in pretty much any Final Fantasy it appears in) the strongest defensive spell in the game, BAR NONE (if only because it's all the others at the same time on your whole team); it's horribly MP-inefficient here, though, with a base cost of 72 (its component spells' combined cost being 18, though it'd at least be 1-to-1 efficiency if I was using everyone). They only cast it when you Control them, as far as I know, but that's plenty to learn it.
Reason number 2: They sometimes drop the Dragon's Whisker, the strongest whip in the game (even including the bonus dungeon). The only other way to get one of these is a rare steal from SHINRYUU, of all enemies. (Amazingly enough, I got it first try, without even abusing save states. Lucky me, huh?)
You can also steal these from them (with their common steal being Dark Matter), but they're not as important since you can get one much more easily later.
POWAH!!! UNLIMITED POWAH!!! (ahem) Anyway, I pick this up before heading to the Phantom Village.
Speaking of which, I'm gonna pick some stuff up here.
Piano sidequest complete!
I buy two each of Hermes Sandals and Coral Rings, plus the top-tier spells (excluding Holy, Flare, and Meteor, obviously), and sell off my Air Knife and a spare Gaia Hammer and Moonring Blade before heading off to grab the Black Chocobo (meant to screenshot before getting on, but...).
Before I do anything else, though, I do the Mirage Vest thing.
Song collection complete!
Yet another weapon which is only available as a rare steal from one specific monster. While not quite the strongest katana by pure attack power, this DOES have the highest critical rate outside of the bonus dungeon-exclusive one. (My randomizer's getting crowded...)
For the record, a sort of "unofficial" condition of this run has been "fill the bestiary completely, except for the bonus dungeon." You have no idea how hard it was finding these guys without a map, especially when I tend to get lost ANYWAY...
What, you expected a Gilgamesh wannabe to pick anything else for his first legendary weapon?
Galuf is, at least officially, a Dragoon, so this could come in handy.
Enkidu will probably end up using this on all occasions where it doesn't find its way into Galuf's hands from now on.
ANYWAY, after finally finishing up with all that stuff (and a quick side-trip to where Istory used to be for more monster entries), off to the Island Shrine! (I also obliterate a hilariously out-of-place Goblin on my way here, but that's not really noteworthy outside of aforementioned out-of-place-ness.)
I Flared a Pantera a few times to get this. Nothing interesting- it didn't even DO anything, it just tried to Blaster me (it failed) and then disintegrated. Certainly not worth a video.
New weapon, monster only, blah blah blah. Next. (Also, these guys have WAY too many HP, and are immune to pretty much anything you could possibly do to speed things up.)
: How do we even carry all this crap anyway?
: I have no idea...
Huh. Who woulda thought Death Claw would work on this guy?
Still don't expect to use this, but now I have enough to go around, at least. (You could theoretically steal one from Odin, but screw that.)
I could've stolen this back in Exdeath's Castle, but I don't need more than one.
Tot Aevis drops this on top of being stealable, FYI.
Well, if I ever feel like giving Enkidu a defensive helmet instead of the Gold Hairpin I've got one now.
: I don't see any girls here. Do you?
: Nope. Maybe he's hallucinating.
Vs. Wendigo. Starting to reconsider having some of the obsolete-but-status-inflicting weapons around (not that that'll let me get rid of this one), but that's something to decide on later. (I hate this guy's gimmick...)
: Great, four targets, only one of which is real. I hate these guys.
: Especially when they switch as soon as you find the real one.
: How much do you wanna bet that they've got some kinda nasty trick they use if you just try to blast 'em all?
: No bet, that's pretty much guaranteed.

Enkidu is now psychic, or something. He is also glowing red, but that's got nothing to do with anything outside of combat. (I don't like screenshots involving characters with the "glowy" status effects, since I feel like they're eyesores. Is that just me?)
I got a rock! (It's a special rock, but still a rock.)
I'm NOT dealing with any more Tot Aevis(es, or whatever the plural is), even if I have to teleport out to avoid them. And since I'm Omni, I CAN teleport out!
I'll pick out my next batch of legendaries next time, then go for another slab. I want to keep the image count under 40 wherever I can. Yes, I know people have made coherent posts with less, but I like to give visual updates when my situation changes significantly, at minimum.
